Clean the master cylinder casting and caliper casting and fittings. This will prevent
dirt from contaminating the brake system. Contaminants in the brake fluid can
damage components or cause premature wear. This will result in a loss of braking
effectiveness.
Master Cylinder Removal
The master cylinder may be removed by working under the dash from the drivers compartment.
However, you may find it easier to view and work on if you choose to remove the dash. Refer
to
Removing the Dash
in section VB of this service manual. The following instructions
detail the procedure without removing the dash assembly.
1.
Loosen
the brake line fitting at the master cylinder with a few turns. Do not completely
free it from the master cylinder until it has been removed from it’s mounting bracket.
At the time of production, the brake line is attached first to the master cylinder, then
bent and formed to the upper frame assemblies. This tends to create tension on the
brake line into the master cylinder. Once the master cylinder is free, you should be
able to thread it the rest of the way out by hand.

2. Remove the cotter pin and flat washer securing the gas pedal, and slide the assembly
from the bracket. Disconnect the throttle cable linkage at the pedal.

There are 3 flat washers to the outside of the assembly.

Add only fresh clean Dot 5 silicon brake fluid. Old fluid will contaminate the
system, and other types of brake fluid may not be compatible with the brake
system’s components.
