2. Assembled shift lever (20) and drive shaft and
clutch group (C) into the drive housing (39).
A. Align the holes in the drive shaft support (33)
with those in the drive housing (figure 7).
B. Make sure that the drive shaft support is fully
seated in the drive housing and that the drive
shaft bearing (32) remains fully seated in the
drive shaft support.
3. Shift lever screw (38), washer (22), and nut (23).
Tighten
• Shift lever nut to 4.5 N-m (40 lbs. in.).
4. Plate (24), if used, and drive housing plug (21) to
the drive housing (39).
5. Washers (28, 29, and 30) in the same number and
position as noted at disassembly.
6. Armature support bracket (27) to the drive housing
(39).
• Align the mark made prior to disassembly with
that on the drive housing.

A. Start each brush spring onto the post on the
brush holder assembly (7) just enough to hold
the inside end of the spring from turning as
shown in figure 13.
B. Grasp the free end of the spring with needle
nose pliers and twist it to the right over the top
of the brush socket.
C. Push the spring fully onto the post and release
the free end to engage the notch in the brush

2. Brushes (5 and 8) if removed.
A. Refer to figure 14 for proper installed position of
all brushes. Make sure the insulated brushes
(8) go into the brush sockets of the brush hold
er assembly (7) that mounts on the insulation.
B. To install each brush, grasp the free end of the
brush spring with needle nose pliers, twist it to
the right to clear the brush socket, and insert
the brush partly into the brush socket.
C. Gradually release the spring so that its end
contacts the side (not end) of the brush (figure
14). This will hold the brushes retracted until
after the brush holder is installed over the
armature commutator.
3. Grounded brush screws (6).
A. Position the terminals of the grounded brush
