Remove shift rod cover capscrews and cover.

Remove shift rod support assembly retaining bolts and
assembly from case (fig. 2N).
IMPORTANT: Cleanliness is extremely important
and an absolute must when repairing or overhauling
the transmission. Before attempting overhaul proce
dures, thoroughly clean exterior of the transmission
w ith cleaning solvent to prevent dirt from getting
into the gear mechanism.
NOTE: Clutch housing should not be removed from
transmission case unless housing or case require
replacement, or unless the countershaft front bear
ing requires replacement.
Shift Rod Support Assembly
R em o val (Fig. 2N)
1. Remove control top or remote control assembly.
CAUTION: Be careful not to lose lock springs and
balls from support.
M ainshaft Removal
1.
Remove parking brake and drum assembly. Refer to
Brakes, Section 5, Truck Service Manual.
NOTE:
Lock transmission in tw o gears before
removing brake drum retaining nut (fig. 4N).
2.
Remove bolt and lock washer assemblies; then remove
rear bearing cap and speedometer drive gear. Discard
gaskets (fig. 5N).
3.
Remove bolt and lock washer assemblies; then remove
countershaft rear bearing cap and gasket. Discard gas
ket.
