TR A N SM ISSIO N ON-VEHICLE SERVICE

2. Install bolts and w a sh ers that attach tran s
m issio n c a se to flyw heel housing. Tighten bolts to
25-3 0 foot-pounds torque.
3. Tighten the three fle x -p la te-to -co n v erter
b o lts.
In-L ine and V8 Engines . 25-30 F t.-L b s.
V6 Engines ........................ 20-30 F t.-L b s.
4. Install engine rear support (see fig. 3).
NOTE: An arrow is stam ped in the center of
the engine rear support. This arrow should face
the front of v eh icle when equipped with 292, 350,
or 351C en gin es. The arrow should face the rear
of veh icle when equipped with 366 engine.
5. C arefully low er engine and tran sm ission
a sse m b ly onto engine rea r support. Tighten engine
r ea r su p p o r t-to -tr a n sm issio n bolts to torques
sp e c ifie d in figu re 3. Bend lock tabs down over
heads of b olts (where u sed ). Rem ove lifting equip
ment from beneath v eh ic le.
6. In stall the sh eet m etal underpan beneath
the con verter housing.
7. R em ove plugs from o il cooler lin es and
tr a n sm issio n c a se fittin g s. Be su re fittings are
clean and lin t-fr e e , then connect oil cooler lines
to tr a n sm issio n .
8. In stall o il co o ler tube and bracket on right
sid e of tr a n sm issio n . Install o il le v e l gauge (dip
stick ).
9. Connect the sp eed om eter shaft fitting to
adapter at rear of tr a n sm issio n .
10. Connect p ro p eller shaft to tran sm ission
a s d escrib ed in "PROPELLER SHAFTS" (SEC.4D)
of S er v ic e Manual S T - 331-71.
11. Connect parking brake linkage (if used) at
sid e of tr a n sm issio n .
12. Connect the manual se le c to r cable to shift
le v e r at left sid e of tr a n sm issio n .
13. Connect the vacuum modulator line to
m odulator.

14. In stall spark plugs and connect battery
ground strap , p reviou sly disconnected (for safety).
15. Connect any other lin e s , h o ses, or w ires
w hich w ere disconnected to aid in tran sm ission
rem o v a l.
16. R efer to the "TRANSMISSION CONTROL
LINKAGE" (SEC. 7A) of th is supplem ent for ad
justm ent of manual shift linkage.
AT475 AUTO M ATIC T R A N SM ISSIO N
LUBRICATION DETAILS
IMPORTANT: For inform ation on lubrication
in terv a ls and type of lubricant for AT475 tr a n s
m issio n , r efer to LUBRICATION (SEC. 0) of th is
manual.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
If o il le v e l is too high or too low, foam ing of
o il w ill o ccu r. This w ill affect lubrication, cooling,
and p r e s s u r e build-up.
The dipstick and fille r tube are located on the
right sid e of tr a n sm issio n .
1. Apply parking brake firm ly and block d riv
ing w h eels. Start engine and w arm fluid to op erat
ing tem perature.
Move s e le c to r le v e r through a ll sp eed ran ges.
2. Run engine at idle rpm with le v e r in "N"
(N eutral).
3. Clean dipstick and adjacent a rea , then r e
m ove dipstick, clean, r e in se r t, again rem ove and
note fluid le v e l.
4. Add one pint of fluid when le v e l rea ch es
"ADD" mark.
DRAINING AND FILLING
D rain w hile tr a n sm issio n fluid is at operating
tem p eratu re (160°F . m inim um ).
NOTE: This procedure includes replacem ent
of the o il filte r elem en t.
1. C arefully rem ove o il pan.
2. R em ove bolt holding o il filte r to control
valve body, then pull out o il filte r and o il intake
p ipe.
3. In stall a new s e a l ring onto the top of the
o il intake pipe, and lu b ricate the se a l ring with the
sa m e o il a s u sed to r e fill the tr a n sm issio n .
4. In sert the intake pipe and se a l ring into the
hole at the bottom of the tr a n sm issio n . Install new
o il filte r a ssem b ly (includes grom m et) onto the
intake pipe. Tighten retaining bolt to 10-13 foot
pounds torque.
5. In stall the o il pan gasket on the o il pan
(using o il-so lu b le g r e a se to hold the gasket in
p la ce on the pan, if n e c e ssa r y ).
CAUTION: DO NOT use gasket-type
sealing compounds any place either inside
the transm ission or where they might get
washed into the transmission. Also, any
oil soluble greases may be used for tem
porarily retaining parts during assembly.
6. In stall o il pan and gask et. Tighten o il pan
retaining b olts to 10-13 foot-pounds torque.
7. R e fill tr a n sm issio n with approxim ately
9%
pints of recom m ended tra n sm issio n lubricant.
