EFFECTIVITY:
F. Exterior Finish
To ensure that the temperature of the composite structure is kept below 150° F (66° C), the maximum
allowable paint on the wing will have an absorptivity not greater than 0.4, with an emissivity of at least
0.9. The maximum allowable paint on the fuselage will have an absorptivity not greater than 0.6, with
an emissivity of at least 0.7. Refer to Section 51-30 for approved paints.

Paint Schemes
•
No striping or contrasting paint scheme is allowed on composite wing surfaces, horizontal
stabilizer surfaces, or on concave portions of wing root fairings and horizontal root fillets,
except for nationality and registration marks which shall be in accordance with the operating
rules of the applicable registration authority and within the limitations specified in Chapter 4 -
Airworthiness Limitations, of this manual.
•
Wing tips and elevator tips may have contrasting colors covering 100% of their exterior sur-
face.
•
Rudder tips may have contrasting colors covering 100% of their exterior surface.
•
Wheel pants and landing gear fairings may have contrasting colors covering 100% of their
surface area.
•
Metal control surfaces are not subject to paint scheme or color limitations.
•
The vertical stabilizer may have contrasting colors covering 100% of their exterior surface.
•
On fuselage, aft of baggage compartment bulkhead, in addition to registration markings,
total stripe width shall not exceed 51% of fuselage height per side. If stripe width is mea-
sured along the contour, then fuselage height should also be measured along the contour
(from top center to bottom center). If stripe width is measured by horizontal projection, then
fuselage height should also be measured by horizontal projection (vertical dimension only,
overall local height).
•
On fuselage, forward of baggage compartment bulkhead, stripe width shall not exceed 12
inches per side. Additionally, stripe width shall not exceed 6 inches at fuselage stations
where doors are located.
•
No stripe or contrasting color is allowed on fuselage above bottom edge of windows forward
of baggage compartment bulkhead.
•
Striping or contrasting colors are allowed on any of the fairings without limitation, except as
specified above (fairings include engine cowl, dorsal fairing and wing root fairings).
WARNING:
Aircraft control surface balance is critical to safe flight. If any paint, body filler,
striping, or other material is added to a control surface, the control must be re-
balanced.
CAUTION:
Use only approved materials per Section 30 - Materials.
CAUTION:
Ensure all materials, areas and parts listed below are properly protected against paint
materials by masking:
Pitot tube, static ports, engine air intake, engine exhaust ducts, engine drains, fresh air
intakes, landing gears, door seals, cabin window and windshield and seals, electrical
equipment and cables, plastic materials, avionics, OAT probes, stall warning vent, stall
strips.
