(10) Expanded Metal Mesh (EMM)
Expanded metal mesh (EMM) is used throughout the airplane for electrical bonding and shield-
ing. When repairing an area that contains EMM, the EMM must be laid over the final ply and
overlap existing EMM by at least 0.2 inch (5.0 mm).
When preparing surface for EMM under antennas, the EMM should be exposed in at least 70%
of the defined area. The defined area is typically the antenna footprint. The footprint area can be
exceeded, but should not be more than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) outside the footprint. When preparing
surface for EMM under bolts or washers, the EMM should be exposed in at least 90% of the
defined area. Areas under bolts and washers can be exposed outside the bolt/washer area but
should not exceed twice the diameter area.
CAUTION:
Because the quality of repair must be thoroughly inspected, do not apply EMM
during the wet lay-up portion of an outer laminate repair. The repair should be fully
cured and inspected before EMM is installed.
(a)
Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
CAUTION:
Do not lay repair plies over EMM. Replacement EMM must be installed over
top layer of repair.
(b)
Using 80 grade sand paper or finer, burnish existing EMM until shiny. Frequently clean
surface of contaminants using vacuum and paint brush to ensure EMM is not damaged.
(c)
Using 80 grade sand paper or finer, burnish replacement EMM until shiny.
(d)
Vacuum repair area.
(e)
Solvent clean repair area.
(f)
Cut EMM. Verify replacement EMM overlaps existing EMM by at least 0.2 inch (0.5 cm).
(g)
Cut two pieces of peel ply. Verify peel ply will overlap installed EMM by at least 1.0 inch
(2.5 cm).
(h)
Cut two pieces of glass repair fabric. Verify glass repair fabric will overlap installed EMM
by at least 0.5 inch (12.7 mm).
