Understanding the Internal Ethernet Management Port
The internal Ethernet management port is also referred to as the Fa0 or fastethernet0 port. It is an
internal Layer 3 port connected to the Onboard Administrator (see
Figure 10-2
). The IP addresses are
assigned to the management port by you through the Onboard Administrator or by the DHCP server. You
can manage the switch through these IP addresses.
We recommend that you let the Onboard Administrator act as the DHCP server, assigning an IP address
to the management port. You can use this address to manage the switch. You must first configure the
internal Ethernet management port as a DHCP client by using the ip address dhcp interface
configuration command.
In a switch stack, only the Ethernet management port on the stack master is enabled. The ports on the
stack members are disabled. You cannot change the IP address of a stack member by using the Onboard
Administrator.
For a standalone switch, connect the Ethernet management port to the PC as shown in
Figure 10-2
.
