Troubleshooting
4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN
Appendix A
I need to upgrade the firmware.
In order to upgrade the firmware with the latest features,
you need to go to the Linksys website and download the
latest firmware at www.linksys.com. Follow these steps:
Go to the Linksys website at
1.
www.linksys.com
and download the latest firmware. Go to System
Management -> Firmware Upgrade, and click
Firmware Download from Linksys Web Site
. Select
the Router from the pull-down menu and choose the
firmware from the options.
Extract the firmware file on your computer.
2.
To upgrade the firmware, follow the steps in the
3.
Upgrade section found in “Chapter 5: Setting Up and
Configuring the Router”.
The firmware upgrade failed.
The upgrade could have failed for a number of reasons. Use
the Linksys
RVS4000 Firmware Rescue Utility
to upgrade the
firmware. Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware:
Go to the Linksys website at http://www.linksys.com
1.
and download
RVS4000 Firmware Rescue Utility v1.2
,
which will be listed with the firmware. Save the zip file
to your computer.
Extract the file
2.
setup.exe
from the zip file, then run
setup.exe
to install the utility on your computer.
Disconnect the network cables from
3.
all
of the Router’s
LAN and WAN ports,
except
the network cable to the
computer that has the firmware upgrade utility.
Run the utility by clicking
4.
Start
,
All Programs
,
Linksys
,
RVS4000 Upgrade Utility
,
RVS4000 Upgrade Utility
,
or by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the
5.
upgrade.
My DSL service’s PPPoE is always disconnecting.
PPPoE is not actually a dedicated or always-on connection.
The DSL ISP can disconnect the service after a period of
inactivity, just like a normal phone dial-up connection to
the Internet. There is a setup option to “keep alive” the
connection. This may not always work, so you may need
to re-establish connection periodically.
To connect to the Router, go to the web browser, and
1.
enter
http://192.168.1.1
or the IP address of the
Router.
Enter the password, if asked (default password is
2.
admin
).
On the
3.
Setup -> WAN
tab, select the option
Keep
Alive
, and set the
Redial Period
option at
20
(seconds).
Click
4.
Save Settings
.
If the connection is lost again, follow steps 1 and 2 to re-
establish connection.
I can’t access my email, web, or VPN, or I am getting
corrupted data from the Internet.
The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) setting may need
to be adjusted. By default, the MTU is set at 1500. For most
DSL users, it is strongly recommended to use MTU 1492. If
you are having difficulties, perform the following steps:
To connect to the Router, go to the web browser, and
1.
enter
http://192.168.1.1
or the IP address of the
Router.
Enter the password, if asked (the default password is
2.
admin
).
Go to the
3.
Setup -> WAN
tab.
Look for the MTU option, and select
4.
Manual
. In the
Size
field, enter
1492
.
Click
5.
Save Settings
to continue.
If your difficulties continue, change the Size to different
values. Try this list of values, one value at a time, in this
order, until your problem is solved:
1462
1400
1362
1300
I need to use port triggering.
Port triggering looks at the outgoing port services
used and will trigger the Router to open a specific port,
depending on which port an Internet application uses.
Follow these steps:
To connect to the Router, go to the web browser, and
1.
enter
http://192.168.1.1
or the IP address of the
Router.
Enter the password, if asked (the default password is
2.
admin
).
Click the
3.
Firewall -> Port Range Triggering
tab.
Enter any name you want to use for the Application
4.
Name.
Enter the Start and End Ports of the Triggered Range.
5.
Check with your Internet application provider for
more information on which outgoing port services it
is using.
Enter the Start and End Ports of the Forwarded Range.
6.
Check with your Internet application provider for
more information on which incoming port services are
required by the Internet application.
