Fuel System
16
WARNING
• Make sure fuel lines are the correct length and are properly routed. Failure to heed this warning
could result in damage to the fuel lines and fire.
BLEEDING AIR FROM FUEL SYSTEM
See General Warnings, Section 1, Page 1-2.
WARNING
• Do not bleed the fuel system while the engine is hot. Fire could result if fuel contacts hot surfaces.
• Diesel fuel under pressure can penetrate skin or eyes, causing serious injury or death. Fuel leaks
under pressure may not be visible. Use a piece of cardboard or wood to find leaks. Do not use your
bare hand. Wear safety goggles. If fluid enters skin or eyes, get immediate medical attention from
a physician familiar with this injury.
When to bleed air from the system:
• fuel tank runs empty
• after hoses and/or components have been disconnected for service or maintenance
• prior to starting the engine after prolonged storage
1.
Fill the fuel tank to the FULL mark.
2.
Operate the fuel pump for a few seconds by turning key switch to the START position and hold for a few
seconds.
3.
Loosen the air vent on top of the fuel filter assembly to allow air bubbles to escape. Tighten vent once
bubbling stops.
4.
Operate the fuel pump again for a few seconds.
5.
Open the air vent on top of the injection pump to allow air bubbles to escape. Tighten vent once bubbling stops.
FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT
See General Warnings, Section 1, Page 1-2.
The fuel system contains a fuel filter with an integrated water separator
. The fuel filter, fuel
lines, and the fuel tank vent should be inspected periodically for leaks and replaced when necessary. Fuel filter changes
should not exceed the recommended interval.
See Periodic Service Schedule on page 10-1. See following NOTE.
NOTE:
Use only OEM fuel filters designed for your engine.
Draining Water from the Fuel Filter – Until late-2011 Model Year
The fuel filter also functions as a water separator. It has a drain valve (1) on the bottom of the filter to drain water from
the fuel system
. Water should be drained from the fuel filter/water separator daily. The fuel
filter is mounted to the chassis under the passenger-side seat.
