Learn the storm signals.
It is best to avoid operating your boat in foggy
weather. When fog sets in, use your GPS and radar
unit, if equipped, to take bearings and log courses
and speeds. You are required to emit a five-second
blast from your horn or whistle once every minute.
Additionally, have passengers wear PFDs and
observe for oncoming vessels.
Skill/Experience
Practice your boat operating skills often in calm
water. Avoid windy conditions and rough water. Be
sure to maintain good visibility at all times. Do not
practice close to any obstructions such as piers,
bridges, swim areas or moored boats.
Proceed slowly and give yourself plenty of time to
react. Remember, your boat is not an automobile. It
requires additional time to maneuver and stop.
Visibility
Visibility is not only sight, but also hearing. It is very
important the operator maintains good visibility at
all times. Arrange passengers and equipment to
ensure you have unobstructed vision at all times.
Check for other boats or any obstacles before
turning the boat.
