Installation Overview
For the most efficient and effective rack installation, follow the steps
summarized below. More detailed instructions follow later in this chapter.
■
Select an appropriate site for your rack and make sure the stabilizer feet
are installed.
See “Selecting an Optimum Environment” later in this chapter. The
Installing Rack Products CD, the Rack Builder Configuration Tool, and the
Rack Information Library all have information on how to do this.
Information can also be downloaded from the Compaq website:
www.compaq.com
■
Unpack the server and rack mounting hardware.
See “Unpacking the Server” later in this chapter.
■
Install any server hardware options.
See Chapter 2, “Installing Hardware Options,” or refer to the option kits for
detailed instructions. To reduce the weight of the server and make it more
manageable during rack installation, do not install hot-plug SCSI drives
until after rack mounting. Weight can also be reduced by removing hot-
plug redundant power supplies until the rack installation is complete.
■
Check switches settings for system board, peripheral board, and SCSI
IDs.
See Appendix E, “Switch Settings.”
■
Attach rack mounting hardware to the rack and to the server.
See “Attaching Rack Mounting Hardware” later in this chapter.
■
Slide the server into the rack.
See “Installing the Server in the Rack” later in this chapter.
■
Attach the cable management arm to the cable management arm bracket.
See “Cabling the Server” later in this chapter.
■
Attach the optional cable support to the back of the rack.
The cable support is needed only if you are routing cables from one side of
the rack to the other. See “Cabling the Server” later in this chapter.
■
Connect keyboard, mouse, monitor, network, and power cables.
See “Cabling the Server” later in this chapter.
