9-1.2. Cleaning Aluminum Alloy Parts
Degrease an aluminum alloy part by spraying or brushing it with mineral spirits. Soak
heavily soiled parts for 15 minutes in mineral spirits. To remove carbon and gum
deposits, perform the following procedure:
Procedure
1.
Immerse the part in a hot bath of any of the following just long enough to remove the
deposit:
a.
Inhibited, mild alkaline cleaning solution
b.
Hot, soapy water
c.
Carbon solvent (only for hard, thick carbon deposits)
CAUTION: Do not use an alkaline etching solution.
2.
Remove the cleaned part from the bath.
3.
Rinse and remove all traces of the cleaning solution either by brush or jet stream of
mineral spirits or by using boiling water or steam.
CAUTION: Remove all cleaning solvent residue (especially if soap
or alkaline solvent used), paying particular attention to crevices,
recesses, and holes to prevent formation of foaming emulsion in the
engine oil on re-assembly. If not removed completely, the alkaline
residue can corrode the part.
When utilizing compressed air, wear OSHA approved safety glasses,
goggles or faceshield. Never exceed 30 psi when using compressed
gases for cleaning purposes. (OSHA 1910.242(b))
4.
Dry the part with a jet of dry compressed air.
5.
If the carbon deposits still remain on the part, dry blast the part as follows:
a.
Before blasting, install seals in small holes and on machine-finished surfaces to
protect them from blasting.
CAUTION: Do not tumble blast wrought or die cast smooth surface
parts such as rocker covers or intake tubes.
b.
Use blast media made of plastic pellets or natural materials such as wheat grains,
crushed fruit pits, or shells.
c.
Adjust air blast pressure to the lowest setting that will produce the desired
cleaning action and aim toward the carbon deposit.
d.
Remove all cleaning blast debris after blasting.
e.
Remove protective seals and covers installed prior to blasting.
6.
If the alodine finish was removed or worn during this cleaning, restore alodine finish
according to Section 9-2.1.
