Engine Cylinder Maintenance
These procedures apply only to instances individual engine cylinder replacement or
service as a maintenance item, not for engine overhaul. Refer to the Overhaul Manual
(OH-24) for instructions on replacing and/or repairing multiple engine cylinders.
10-8.1. IOF-550-B & C Valve Train Removal
WARNING
If power is not disconnected, a loose or broken wire could
allow the engine to start and the propeller to rotate. Do not
allow anyone to stand within the arc of the propeller.
Procedure
1.
Disconnect engine electrical power and turn Master Power Switch and Ignition
Switch to the OFF positions.
2.
Remove cowling and any airframe supplied accessories in accordance with the
airframe manufacturer's instructions.
3.
Disconnect the battery in accordance with the airframe manufacturer's instructions.
4.
Disconnect all spark plug leads from the cylinder(s) to be removed.
5.
Tag the propeller with the warning "DO NOT TURN PROPELLER."
6.
Position the crankshaft so the piston is at top dead center and both intake and exhaust
valves of the rocker arms to be removed are closed.
7.
Refer to Figure 10-59; remove the screws (32), lock washers (31) and washers (30)
and the rocker cover (29) from the cylinder. Discard the lock washers (31).
8.
Remove and discard the rocker cover gasket (28).
9.
Remove the screws (20), washers (19) from the rocker arm boss.
10.
Slide the valve rocker shafts (18) out far enough to remove the rocker arms (21 & 24)
and thrust washers (27).
11.
Remove the rocker arms (21and 24) and thrust washers (27) from the rocker shafts.
12.
Remove the pushrods (39) from the cylinder.
13.
Inspect the rocker arms, thrust washers, and pushrod tubes according to instructions
in Section 10-8.5.
