BILGE SYSTEM
IMPORTANT
The discharge of oil or oily waste into
or upon the navigable waters of the
United States or of the contiguous
zones is strictly prohibited by the
Federal Water Pollution Control Act.
If such a discharge occurs and
causes a film or sheen on, or
discoloration of the surface of the
water, or causes an emulsion or
sludge beneath the surface of the
water, the violators are subject to a
penalty of $5,000. Notify the USCG
immediately or call toll free
1-800-424-8802 to report any such
incident.
The deep part of the hull, where incidental
water drains, is called the bilge. Water will
enter the yacht for a number of reasons, but
entry will be particularly heavy during
periods of long rains, heavy storms and high
seas. The water that enters is pumped
overboard by the bilge pumps. The bilge is
vented through the hull and bilge blowers
are used to speed up the evacuation of
fumes from the engine compartment.
Pumps
CAUTION
DO NOT rely upon electric
equipment to operate trouble-free.
Frequent inspection of the bilge to
make sure the pumps are operating
properly is a necessity.
The pumps can be operated manually, or left
in the automatic mode.
CAUTION
DO NOT allow pump to run after all
the water has been cleared from the
bilge area. Damage to the pump will
occur if the pump is allowed to
operate with no water.
This feature allows bilge pumps operation
when the master battery switch is turned
OFF. When water in the bilge reaches a
certain level, a triggering device turns the
pump ON. When the water drains, the pump
automatically turns the pump OFF.
Power is supplied to AUTO BILGE PUMPS
by the house battery. The MANUAL BILGE
PUMP controls will bypass the auto feature,
allowing the option of controlling the pumps
manually. Turning the bilge pumps OFF will
return the bilge pumps to automatic
operation.
Blowers
WARNING
Fuel vapors can explode! Before
starting engines, check engine
compartment for the presence of
fuel vapors. Operate the blowers for
at least four minutes before starting
the engines. Turn the blowers ON
when idling or operating below
cruising speed.
The
520 Express Series
is equipped with
12 volt DC powered bilge blowers which
provide ventilation for the engine
compartment.
