3.24 Operating System Installation with an External USB Device
Materials Required:
USB Device, installation files, HDMI capable display, USB
keyboard, USB mouse (optional) and a USB HUB (optional).
BT1 supports USB 2.0. The OS can be installed with an external USB device such as:
l
External CD-ROM Drive
l
External DVD-ROM Drive
l
External Hard Drive
l
Flash (thumb) Drive (preferred faster method)
3.24.1 Installation Files on the Install Media
From the BT1 to boot from install media, the image should include:
l
a kernel at /install/e500mc/vmlinux
l
a ramdisk at /install/e500mc/initrd.gz with an optional file /install/e500mc/append
containing extra kernel command line parameters.
You can use your own install media or one from an OS vendor. Ubuntu install media conforms to
Cyphre system needs.
3.24.2 Performing the Install
You will also need a standard HDMI-capable video monitor and a USB keyboard. There are three
USB connectors. One on the front panel, two others on the rear. The BT1 supports USB hubs
powered or not.
Note:
The recommended installation method is from a BOOTP server
over your local Ethernet.
Note:
Installing the OS from an external device may take several
hours to complete.
1.
If using one, connect your USB hub to the front panel USB connector.
2.
Connect the external USB device, a USB keyboard and a mouse to the USB hub ports.
3.
Connect a display monitor to the HDMI port, rear panel.
4.
Power up the appliance.
5.
When the Cyphre splash screen displays, press
ESC
to enter the System Setup.
6.
Connect your installation media (CD/DVD/flash/Ext-HD).
7.
At the Boot menu, select
Boot Installer
.
