The histogram of a RAW 14-bit image in Table 6 shows that the relevant information often resides
in only a small segment of the overall dynamic range of the sensor. When not using adaptive
contrast enhancement, the bit range to display may not be optimal as it depends on the average
pixel value of the scene. The adaptive contrast enhancement algorithm allows for scene dependent
optimized contrast while still being able to fine-tune the range compression, rather than relying on
fixed and discrete steps of bit ranges.
Note: The actual average pixel value of the image can shift depending on the exposed
scene and the ambient camera temperature therefore it always recommended to use the
image range compression feature to ensure optimal display.
