Using the System Control Monitor
B-2
014–002091
You can access the SCM intentionally by executing the SCM interrupt sequence
<
Ctrl–C
> before your operating system software boots at powerup. After powerup
testing completes, execute the sequence repeatedly until you see the SCM prompt.
CAUTION: Never use the SCM
Ctrl–C
sequence during powerup testing. If you
want to interrupt the automatic boot sequence, wait until you see the
message
Passed
after the diagnostic test messages on your screen.
•
You can use UNIX operating system commands to shut down the system, stop all
processors, anddisplay the SCM prompt. If you are running the DG/UX system,
always try the following commandsequence to shut down the operating system
properly:
# cd /
# shutdown
NOTE:
You can modify the
shutdown
commandto specify whether you want
to bring down the system immediately, or provide a period of time for
users to log out. Refer to your DG/UX documentation for information.
Then, halt the operating system to display the SCM prompt, as follows:
# halt –q
SCM>
If you don't have the DG/UX system, refer to your operating system documentation
for information about properly shutting down before halting the system.
CAUTION: Always try to shut down your operating system properly before
attempting to halt the system. Halting your system while the operating
system or other software is running may result in lost or corrupted
data.
•
Most system software supports a keyboardbreak sequence you can use to halt
current processing and display the SCM prompt. Which keys you press depend on
both your keyboardtype andthe support of your operating system or stand-alone
program. For information about the proper keyboardsequence to halt your system
andenter the SCM, refer to the documentation that came with your operating
system or other system software.
CAUTION: Always try to shut down your operating system properly before
attempting to halt the system. Halting your system while the operating
system or other software is running may result in lost or corrupted
data.
To halt the DG/UX system when it is hung (seems frozen andyou cannot continue
operation), holddown the
key andtype three sets of right andleft bracket
keystrokes in sequence, as follows:
] [ ] [ ] [
(be sure to holddown the
key while doing this)
This shouldhalt current processing anddisplay the SCM prompt.
