shows how to structure a command; it shows the variables that
must be supplied and the available options. A syntax line is a
fragment of program code that shows how to use a particular
routine; some syntax lines contain variables.

Commands, pathnames, and names of files

Represents a system response on your
screen. Syntax lines also use this font.

Represents the system command prompt
symbols used for the Bourne and C shells,
respectively.

Represents the superuser prompt.
In command lines and other examples:
Represents the New Line key, the name of
the key used to generate a new line. (Note
that on some keyboards this key might be
called Enter or Return instead of New Line.)
Throughout this manual, a space precedes
the New Line symbol; this space is used only
to improve readability—you can ignore it.
