Novell NetWare
Novell NetWare consists of various network operating system products from Novell, Inc.
that run on PCs and Macintoshes.
Packet
A grouping of data bytes and control information such as source and destination
addresses that are transmitted as a whole from one device to another on a network.
PDS
Packet Driver Specification (PDS) is a specified drive structure used together with a
higher level protocol (e.g., TCP/IP).
Patch Cable (Test Cable)
A short, flexible cable terminated at both ends that is used to interconnect LAN
equipment.
Port
The entry and exit point of data going in and out of a network device.
Promiscuous Mode
A device’s MAC (Medium Access Control) interface which captures all packets on the
collision domain.
Protocol
Standards established to let devices connect and exchange information with a minimum
amount of errors. These standards specify packet format, timing sequencing and error
detection.
Protocol Stack
A group of protocols that are stacked above each other in a layered structure are called a
protocol stack
or
protocol suite
. Each protocol uses the services provided by the lower
layer and provides services for the next higher level. TCP/IP includes over a 100
standards (i.e., TP, IP and TCP).
Radio Wave
A system of sending transmissions through the air or by radio links to connect devices on
a network.
Repeater
A
repeater
amplifies or regenerates a data transmission signal so that it can continue its
path at its original strength and form. These devices connect two Ethernet networks or
network segments into a bus or star topology.
Repeaters
regenerate and retime the packet
signal, automatically isolating faulty segments. Repeaters, hubs and concentrators
essentially perform the same function.
