Arcing
Check the connector on the connector pigtail of the transducer array for signs
of arcing. A black carbon material or voids in the rubber are signs of arcing.
If a connector has arced, both the connector and its mating connector should
be cleaned thoroughly to remove all carbon and dirt. If the rubber has
significantly eroded, replace the connector. Inspect the mating connector and
replace it also if it shows the same symptoms.
Tap Test
Connect an oscilloscope to the pins of the transducer array’s connector.
Refer to Section 6, "Drawings," for the wiring diagrams. Tap the face of the
transducer array with a screw driver handle or other smooth, light object and
note the waveform on the oscilloscope. The peak voltage level should be in
the hundreds of millivolts.
Short Circuit Test
Disconnect the transducer array cable from the electronics housing and clean
the connector. Using a megometer or a digital multimeter on the highest ohm
scale, measure the resistance of
each
pin of the connector to every other pin.
All measurements should read greater than 10 megohms; however, a value
as low as 1 megohm will allow the system to work temporarily as the short
circuit is still developing.
Transmit Test
Transmit into the transducer arrays. Listen for voltage arcing or hissing which
indicates a faulty transducer element. It also should be possible to feel the
transmit pulse with the hand; however, it may be faint or strong depending on
the amount of pressure and part of the hand that is applied.
Heading Sensor Calibration
If it is determined that the tow vehicle heading does not appear to correlate
well with the ship’s heading, the heading sensor may require calibration. With
the tow vehicle deployed and underway, the calibration can be performed by
using Windows HyperTerminal in the Accessories program group. Perform
the procedure listed below to calibrate the heading sensor. Press

after
typing each command.
