Description
The Neptune 5000 system can use either a Datem 5cm
2
or 10 cm
2
Digital
Cone. The Cone is the main sensor of the system that a pushed into the
ground to obtain the geotechnical soil data. The cones are manufactured to
high physical dimensional tolerances in order to meet strict miniature cone
penetrometer testing guidelines.
Each cone has three standard sensors. The basic function is sensing the
resistive force applied to the tip and friction sleeve as the cone is pushed into
the soil. Dual axis inclinometers fitted in the electronics housing provide an
indication of the cone’s conical angle from a vertical datum point. An optional
pore pressure element can be fitted in the end of the cone to sense the
pressure differential generated as the cone moves deeper into the seabed.
All Datem cones contain sophisticated electronic systems that fulfil precision
power stabilisation and signal conditioning functionality. The main advantage
of using a digital output is that system noise or the length of the
interconnecting wires between the cone and the subsea electronics units does
not affect the data. All functions of the cone are controlled internally using an
on-board microprocessor.
Special Features of the Digital Cone include:
1.
Gauge measurement undertaken by non-multiplexed delta-sigma
converters, which are under full control of the microprocessor.
2.
Individual calibration data stored internally on non-volatile
memory.
3.
Tilt data obtained from the dual axis digital output accelerometer
