OPERATION
Holding the Unit
WARNING:
To prevent serious
personal injury, avoid arm contact with
the engine while operating the unit.
The engine may be extremely hot.
WARNING:
Always wear eye,
hearing, hand, foot and body
protection to reduce the risk of injury
when operating this unit. Wear a face
mask or dust mask if the operation is
dusty.
DANGER:
Keep all body parts
(hands, feet, face, etc.) away from
moving blades. Contact with moving
blades will result in serious personal
injury.
•
Stand in the operating position (Fig. 13).
Stand up straight. Do not bend over.
•
Keep feet apart and firmly planted.
•
Hold the unit with a firm grip.
•
Hold the shaft grip with the right hand. Keep
the right arm slightly bent.
•
Hold the handle with the left hand. Keep the
left arm straight.
•
DO NOT
cut above shoulder height.
Tips for Best Results
•
Keep the blades sharp and clean. Refer to
Maintaining the Blades
in the
Maintenance
section.
•
Keep the blades properly lubricated. Refer to
Lubricating the Blades
in the
Maintenance
section.
•
To trim new growth, use a wide sweeping
motion with a slight downward tilt of the blade.
•
To trim old growth with thicker stems, use a
sawing motion.
•
Do not try to cut stems larger than 0.5
inches (1.27 cm) in diameter. Use a non-
powered hand saw or pruning saw to trim
large stems.
•
Use a string to obtain a level hedge. Stretch
a string along the top of the hedge at the
desired height and trim the hedge just
above the level of the string (Fig. 14).
•
To trim the sides of the hedge, sweep the
hedge trimmer upward from the bottom of
the hedge to the top. Trim the sides of the
hedge to be slightly narrower at the top.
•
Clean up after operation. Dispose of debris
appropriately.
