from jumping off the pulleys.
5. Loosen the thumbscrew and gently pull the end of the wire from the retaining hole.
6. Using a hand-over-hand action, simply pull the wire from the capstan. Do not allow the wire to
rake over any fixed surface, pulley shaft, or sensor that could be damaged from wire abrasion.
7. After reaching the other end of the wire, loosen the second thumbscrew and pull the wire free.
Removing a Broken Wire
A wire breaks for any number of reasons: a snag or pinch in the specimen, insufficient lubricant
(for a few materials), pulley misalignment, and normal wear. The wire can break at any point along
the capstan, but regardless, the result is two ends of loose wire.
1. Find one of the broken ends and begin pulling it slowly until satisfied that it is not entangled
with the other free spiral of wire. It may prove useful to temporarily hold down this other spiral
with a piece of masking tape.
2. Using a hand-over-hand action, pull this wire from the capstan. Do not allow the wire to rake
over any fixed surface, pulley shaft, or sensor that could be damaged from wire abrasion.
3. After reaching the end of the wire, loosen the thumbscrew and pull the wire free.
4. Repeat this procedure with the other section of wire.

Installing a New Wire
1. If you have not already done so, move the wire tension pulleys
to their innermost position. Reduce the pressure to less than
10psi and switch the
Tensioner RUN/WIRE
switch to
WIRE
.
2. Switch to Manual mode (front panel switch) and set to wire
mode by switching the
Capstan RUN/WIRE
switch (back
panel) to
WIRE
.
3. Home the Capstan: There is a sensor at the forward end of the
capstan assembly that is used to determine the home position
of the capstan. The capstan must find its home position before
the saw is wired. To home the capstan press the
RESET
button and set the wire Speed control to about 20%. The
capstan rotates in one direction until it reaches full travel and
stops automatically. If the capstan stops at the far end, closest
to the motor, press the RESET button again to bring the
