A lot of shadows in a display
This kind of defect is also caused by a bad contact between LCD unit and the circuit board.
Two symmetrical segments are missing
When you see a similar situation as in the picture above, a connection between the microcontroller and the
printed circuit board is not making good contact.
You should open the clock and press with your fingers on the side of the microcontroller (the big black chip)
and watch if the missing segments will show.
If you can locate which side of the chip may be the cause, then first inspect all connections on that side with
a magnifying glass. Especially watch out for shortcuts, caused by excess use of soldering tin.
If you don't find any shortcuts, then push the individual connectors on the board with a fine pointed heated
soldering iron. This is a careful kind of work.
