AS/400 User Guide
Tape Management
Before you can save or restore information to or from a tape respective, you must have a tape
in the tape drive.
Warning: Before beginning any tape operation, you should make sure that the tape
is set to the proper setting (either write-protected to prevent overlay or non-write
protected to allow writing to) depending on the particular use of the tape.
Instructions include:

Load Tape
•
Unload Tape
•
Display Tape
•
Initialize Tape
Load Tape
Steps:
To load a tape, follow these steps:
1.
Remove the tape from its protective cover. This is usually a clear plastic box that
protects the tape from dust, light or moisture.
2.
Go to the front of the AS/400 CPU unit. Depending upon your model you may have
one or more tape drives. Locate the proper tape door.
3.
Press the blue tape door release button to pop open the tape door.
4.
Slide the tape vertically into the drive as far as you can by hand until it stops. DO
NOT FORCE THE TAPE ALL THE WAY IN.
5.
Close the tape door until it latches which will slide the tape the rest of the way into the
drive. The blue tape door release button will pop back out.
6.
You are now ready to begin tape operations

Unload Tape
Steps:
1.
Go to the front of the AS/400 CPU unit. Depending upon your model you may have on
or more tape drives. Locate the proper tape door.
2.
Press the blue tape door release button to pop open the tape door and eject the tape.
3.
Slide the tape vertically out of the drive.
