4.
Make sure that the meter is switched ON and that it has charged batteries
inside. Some types of millimeter are switched on automatically when you turn
the measurement selection knob.
5.
(a) If the meter is an analogue type as shown on this page, make sure that the
needle points to 0 volts when the metal tips of the metal leads are not
touching anything. If the needle does not point to 0 volt, adjust zero setting
screw until it does. Look at the scale with straight in front of you so that
you can read it accurately. Do not look from an angle.
(b) If a meter is a digital type, make sure it read 0.0 volts when you touch the
meter leads together.
6.
Touch the metal tips of the meter leads to the electric terminals across which
you want to measure the voltage. Be careful not to short-circuit the terminals
by touching both the terminals with the same probe. If you short-circuit the
terminal large currents may flow and cause damage to components.
7.
Read the voltage from the meter. Make sure that you read from the correct
range on the scale.
8.
SWITCH THE METER OFF after you have finished taking the measurement.
If you do not do this, the batteries may become drained.
