l) Practical Advice for the First Hover Flights
Your model helicopter in now ready for the first test flights and you can start training. However, even as you teach
yourself to fly the helicopter there are some basic things which must always be observed:
• For hover flight training, the tail of the helicopter must always point in your direction.
• To start, lift the helicopter approx. 20 – 30 cm from the ground, in order to be able to have it touch down quickly in
case of an emergency landing.
• In case of an emergency landing, do not retract the pitch lever too quickly, as the helicopter will touch down very
hard.
• If the rotors are blocked by an obstacle, then pull the Pitch stick immediately in the lowest position in order to switch
off the drive motors.
• At the start location, draw a mark on the ground and try maintaining the helicopter in a hover directly above it.
• When you are familiar with hovering close to the ground, add some pitch and have the helicopter hover at about 1 m
height. Since the air pressed downwards by the rotors no longer reaches the ground now, the helicopter will fly much
more stable at this height.
Important information!
If the status LED at the control component (see figure 12, item 2) changes from green to red during flight,
you have to charge your model immediately to prevent damaging deep discharging of the flight rechargeable
battery.
The closed design of the fuselage strongly heats up the electric motors during operation. This makes it
necessary to always put in sufficient breaks after flights. Let the motors cool off to ambience temperature
before, e.g., starting again with a second battery.
If after a few flights you develop a keen sense of your helicopter, you can carry out further optimizations.
