CHARGING SYSTEM
TROUBLESHOOTING
Check:
1. charging voltage
2. main fuse
3. battery
4. charging coil resistance
5. wiring connections
(of the entire charging system)
TIP:
• Before troubleshooting, remove the follo-
wing part(s):
1.Seat
2.
Front fender
• Troubleshoot with the engine tachomter
and pocket tester.
1. Charging voltage
• Connect the engine tachometer to the
spark plug lead.
• Connect the pocket tester (DC 20 V) to the
battery.
Positive tester probe
positive battery
terminal
Negative tester probe
negative battery
terminal
• Start the engine and let it run at approxima-
tely 3000 r/min.
• Measure the charging voltage.
Charging voltage
12 V or more at 3000 r/min
15 V or less at 8000 r/min
NOTE:
Make sure the battery is fully charged.
• Is the charging voltage within specification?
2. Main fuse
• Check the fuse for continuity.
Refer to “CHECKING THE FUSES” in chap-
ter 3.
• Is the fuse OK?
3. Battery
• Check the condition of the battery.
Refer to “CHECKING AND CHARGING THE
BATTERY” in chapter 3.
Minimum open-circuit voltage
12.0V or more at 20°C
• Is the battery OK?
4. Charging coil resistance
• Disconnect the DC-CDI magneto coupler.
• Connect the pocket tester (
Ω
x 1) to the
charging coils as shown.
The charging circuit
is OK.
Replace the fuse.
• Recharge or
replace the
battery.
• Clean the battery
terminals.
