Fixing the X Scale on a Milling
Machine
One of the easiest ways to set up an X scale on
a milling machine, if the side of the table is machined,
is to clamp two parallels to the flat table surface
that the table travels on and sit the Scale on the
parallels.

Mount the scale on the backing plate using the
p r e d r i l l e d h o l e s , c h e c k i n g t h a t t h e s c a l e i s
p a r a l l e l w i t h t h e m a c h i n e s l i d e w i t h a d i a l
indicator
When the scale is mounted then fix the
reader head to the saddle, if necessary
p a c k i n g t h e h e a d t o i n s u r e t h a t i t i s
parallel and in line with the scales.
(The blue packing between the reader
h e a d a n d s c a l e a l l o w s f o r t h e c o r r e c t
clearance and holds the reader head
parallel to the scale.)
Mount the cover over the scale and drill and tap
the holes to secure it to the table making sure that
there is 3mm clearance between the cover and the
s c a l e .

If the surface is not machined mount the
b a c k i n g p l a t e a n d u s e t h e g r u b s c r e w s
t o a d j u s t t h e b a c k i n g p l a t e , c h e c k i n g
w i t h a d i a l i n d i c a t o r , u n t i l t h e s c a l e i s
square and perpendicular to the machine
slides.

Carefully drill and tap the holes to take the
screws provided
