0
Place the kettle onto the base in any
position you wish.
0
Press the ON/OFF switch (5) inwards,
the pilot lamp (6) lights up and the
appliance starts heating.
3
The ON/OFF switch (5) only catches
when the kettle is on the base unit (3).
3
Do not use the water from the first boi-
ling cycle to prepare food.
The automatic switch off
The kettle will switch itself off automati-
cally and the pilot light will go out when
the water has boiled.
If you want to interrupt the boiling cycle
before it switches off automatically, simply
press the ON/OFF switch (5) or lift the
kettle. If you want to reheat water which
has already been heated, press the ON/OFF
button again (5). When the water is boiling
the kettle switches itself off automatically.
Instant function (only EWA
173.)
With the instant switch (7) you activate the
instant function of the kettle (set to posi-
tion 2).
When the appliance is operated on the
instant function, a thermostat switches off
the heating before the water boils. This
temperature is ideally suitable for pouring
over many instant drinks or stocks.
A water temperature just under boiling
point is also recommended for some types
of teas. Slight temperature differences can
arise depending on how full the kettle is.
After the thermostat switches off, the pilot
light stays on until the appliance is swit-
ched off at the ON/OFF switch (5), or the
kettle is lifted from the base unit (3).
Limescale filter
The limescale filter (8) in the spout retains
any limescale residues in the kettle.
0
To remove the limescale filter, push it
downwards on the top cover.
0
To fit the limescale filter, insert it into
the spout and pull upwards on the
cover until it engages.
Safety system
All AEG kettles are equipped with a boil-dry
safety cut-out. This feature protects the
appliance from overheating when started
without water or from boiling until it is
empty if used with the lid open. If the
appliance is accidently switched on without
water, it is automatically protected against
overheating. The heating process is auto-
matically interrupted. Before using the
kettle again let it cool down for 5-
10 minutes.
Cleaning and care
1
Always disconnect the kettle from the
mains supply before cleaning.
1
Never clean the kettle and base unit
under running water or immerse it in was-
hing-up water.
0
Occasionally rinse out the kettle with
clean water.
0
Clean the outside of the appliance
only using a damp cloth. Do not use
any caustic or abrasive cleansing
agents.
Descaling
When the bottom of the kettle has too
much limescale, the heating process is
interrupted by a thermostat and delays the
instant function from being switched off in
the case of model EWA 173.
