3. How screws are used
How are screws used around us? They are mainly used to stabilize objects by screwing them
together. Imagine a box with a machine inside, such as an electronic game, a TV, a radio and
a clock. They all have the covers screwed on their back sides. Screws are often used to seal
objects. Imagine the mouth of a pop bottle. It is shaped so that the mouth of the bottle is
shaped like a screw, and the cap works like a nut. Screws are also used to transport objects.
When a screw rotates in position, the attached nut will move accordingly if it is designed not
to rotate together with the screw. For example, this mechanism is used to move the head of a
CD player (the part which reads the laser reflected from CD players.) Other usages for
screws are for measurement and a means to change small amount of power to big amount of
power. Screws are used for many purposes around us. Next time you find screws, let’s take a
moment to think for which purpose they are used.
