Areas dominated by vegetation, such as forests, gardens, and parkland (where the 3D features
all look the same, forming a homogenous blanket surface).
Smooth tunnels or passageways with featureless walls.
Environments with an excess of moving objects, such as cars, trucks, and plant machinery.
Areas with very similar and repetitive features and patterns.
Environments with many features that can absorb or reflect LiDAR beams, such as water, and
dark, flat paints.
Transitioning through very narrow passages.
In these environments, Hovermap may struggle to operate as a position holding or collision avoidance
system.
On the other hand, an example of a good environment would be the center of a city, with several large
and distinct buildings, which would help Hovermap track itself. In this environment, Hovermap would
be able to operate both more effectively, and at a greater height, than in a sparser environment.
It's
also important to remember that vegetation can be both a distinctive feature
and
relatively
featureless, depending on the density of foliage in an area. A single tree might be a distinct feature to
Hovermap, but a dense canopy can appear as white noise. In this case, it is not much better than an
open field.
As a general rule, you should:
Fly as low and as slow as possible, based on the type of environment you are in.
Keep any environmental features in front of Hovermap as much as possible.
Avoid scanning in areas with lots of moving objects.
Make sure that there are enough 3D features within at least 50 m of the Hovermap.
Where possible, add 3D features to smooth environments (such as inside concrete water pipes).
Move Hovermap in such a way that it can continuously see where it has been and where it is
going, especially when going through narrow passages and doorways.
