Appendix K Glossary of Terms
ADSL
(Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) - a standard for transmitting at speeds up to 8 Mbps over a
single copper pair. Asymmetrical means that the download speed is faster than the upload speed.
ATM
(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) - technology that uses fixed-length packets or cells to switch voice,
data, and video traffic over local and wide area networks.
Attenuation
- the dissipation of the power of a transmitted signal as it travels over the copper line
B-Channel
Bearer Service Channel
- Operates at 56 or 64 Kbps and carries user voice and data. The bit
rate depends on the location of the service provider.
BRI

Basic Rate Interface
- One of the access methods of an ISDN circuit. Comprising of 2B+D channels.
Bridge Tap
- A bridged tap is a piece of open circuit transmission line connected in parallel somewhere
between the ends of an operating telephone pair. The balance of the original circuit is not cut off but remains
in place as an unterminated (open circuit) pair of wires.
BRITL
Basic Rate Interface Dial-Up Test Line
- A feature of AT&T switches.
CODEC
Coder/Decoder
- Device used to convert analog signals to digital bit streams and vice versa.
CPE
Customer Premise Equipment
- Devices or equipment that the customer provides to interface with the
telephone company.
CRC
Cyclic Redundancy Check
- A mathematical algorithm used to detect bit errors in data transmission.
D-Channel
- The out of band signaling channel that carries ISDN network signals. It can also be used to
carry packet-mode user data. The D-channel operates at 16Kbps in the BRI and 64 Kbps in the PRI.

Echo Cancellation
- A technique used by ADSL, V.32, and V.34 modems that isolates and filters unwanted
signal energy from the echoes caused by the main transmitted signal.
