Firmware Upgrade Installation
In some cases the DDS 402’s firmware may require replacement with an updated
version. There are two user-replaceable firmware chips, U60 — the main
microcontroller and U24, and one set of chips, U67 and U68. The chip set, U67
and U68, are replaced as a pair. The U-numbers are printed on the circuit board.
We recommend that you send the unit in to Extron for service and updates.
Changes to firmware must be performed by authorized service personnel
only. Some DDS 402 firmware updates must be performed at the
Extron factory.
Replace firmware in the DDS 402 as follows:
1.
Disconnect the AC power cord from the DDS 402 to remove power from the
unit.
To prevent electric shock, always unplug the DDS 402 from the AC
power source before opening the enclosure.
2.
Remove the DDS 402 from the rack or furniture.
3.
Remove the cover of the DDS (the top half of the enclosure) by removing the
13 screws, 7 on the top and 3 on each side, then lifting the cover straight up
(figure A-1).

Figure A-1 — Removing the DDS 402 cover
Do not touch any switches or other electronic components inside the
DDS 402. Doing so could damage the scaler. Electrostatic discharge
(ESD) can damage IC chips even though you cannot feel it. You must be
electrically grounded before proceeding with firmware replacement. A
grounding wrist strap is recommended.
4.
Locate the firmware chip(s) to be replaced on the circuit board (figure A-2).
5.
For U67 and U68
, after you are electrically grounded, remove the U67 and
U68 IC chip set (which must be replaced as a pair)
by grasping each chip firmly with your fingers and
pulling it out, then continuing to step 9.
