Disassembly
Use care not to damage the axle
splines.
Loosen the four nuts on the rear wheels a half turn.
Lift and support rear of the vehicle per SAFETY section.
Be sure that the parking brake is released. Remove the
four rear wheel nuts and remove the wheel. Remove the
brake drum (item 1) (Ref Fig. 5 on page D-7).
Remove the cotter pin (item 2) from the clevis pin (item
3) securing the parking brake cable (item 4) to the park-
ing brake lever. Remove the brake line (item 5) from the
rear of the wheel cylinder using 9/16" wrench. Loosen
the four brake mounting bolts (item 6) from the rear axle
(item 7) flange using a 1/2" wrench and remove it using
1/2" socket and extension. Pull the brake assembly (item
8) and rear axle shaft (item 9) out from the axle tube
(item 7) as an assembly. Remove the axle shaft (item 9)
from the brake assembly.
Remove excess dust and dirt from the drum (item 1) with
a parts brush. Remove any accumulated brake dust from
the wheel brake assembly (item 8) with a parts brush.
Unhook upper shoe-to-shoe spring (item 10) and lower
shoe-to-shoe spring (item 11). Remove shoe hold-down
springs (item 12) and remove shoes (item 13). Remove
parking brake strut and lever.
Remove the wheel cylinder bolts (item 15) and remove
the wheel cylinder (item 14) from the backing plate (item
16).
Cleaning And Inspection
To prevent serious injury
or death resulting from a
brake failure, never turn
a brake drum. The drum must not be turned to ‘true’ a
worn friction surface. Turning will make the drum too
thin which could result in a brake failure.
