Repair and Service Manual
Read all of Section B and this section before attempting any procedure. Pay particular attention to all Notes, Cautions and Warnings
GENERAL
Always observe the following warnings when
working on or near batteries:
To prevent serious per-
sonal injury or death
resulting from explosion
caused by an electrical arc, be sure that the key
switch is off and all electrical accessories are turned
off before starting work on vehicle.
Never disconnect a circuit under load at the battery
terminal.
The battery negative (-) cable must be removed before
starting work on vehicle.
Wrap wrenches with vinyl
tape to prevent the possibility
of a dropped wrench from
‘shorting out’ the battery,
which could result in an explosion and severe per-
sonal injury or death.
Cover battery with a shop rag before attempting to
remove direction/drive selector components.
It is not necessary to remove the direction
selector assembly to replace the proximity sen-
sor switch.
Before replacing a suspect direction selector or drive
selector or proximity sensor switch, be sure the shift
cables are properly adjusted (Ref Fig. 2 on page F-2),
the electrical wires are firmly attached and the wire is in
good condition. Test suspect component to be sure that it
has not failed before replacing.

ment
Failure of the transmission to engage correctly

The direction selector and drive selector are the mechan-
ical linkages that operate cables connected to levers on
transmission (transfer case). The cables are sealed and
do not require lubrication, but may require occasional
adjustment. The only maintenance required is periodic
lubrication of the linkage and related moving parts (Refer
PERIODIC SERVICE SCHEDULE section).
The cable length can be adjusted (increased/decreased)
at it’s mounting bracket. This is accomplished by moving
the cable housing forward or backward at the bracket
attachment to increase or decrease the amount of cable
available (Ref Fig. 2 on page F-2).
To decrease the amount of cable available, loosen the
nuts on either side of the bracket and move the cable
away from the lever. Tighten the adjustment nuts after
achieving the correct length.
To increase the amount of cable available, loosen the
nuts on either side of the bracket and move the cable
closer to the lever. Tighten the adjustment nuts after
achieving the correct length.
To remove or detach the cable (item 1) from the ball joint
(item 2), pull the cable (item 1) from the ball joint (item 2)
and remove it (Ref Fig. 3 on page F-3).
