OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
WHEEL.BALANCING
1. Mounting the wheel
(see page 9 accessory book).
(see guide UA.CHOI).
2. Weight positioning
Select one of the 10 following modes using
knob (2). At each turn to the left an audi-
ble beep is heard and the appropriate
mode is displayed in red LED's on your
U.217AS control panel. To return to the
previous position, turn knob (2) clockwise
as far as it will go.
Weight positioning/Balance method
1. Weights clipped both sides
(standard)
2. Weights with adhesive both
sides (standard)
3. Weight with adhesive
outside and clip inside
(standard)
4. Weight hidden outside
and clip inside (better
appearance*)
5. Weight hidden outside and
adhesive inside (better
appearance*)
6. Weight with clip outside,
adhesive inside (rare)
7. Single weight glued centrally
(motorcycle static/thin wheel)
8. Single glued weight (static
or thin wheel)
9. Single clipped weight (static
or thin wheel)
10. Special weights on both
sides (for continental CTS
tyres)
11. Glued balance weights
for Michelin PAX tires**
* When using modes 4 and 5 (hidden
weights), take care to ensure enough clea-
rance from brakes to locate weights.
** In PAX tire mode, width and diameter
dimensions are expressed in millimetres
as indicated on the tire itself.
3- Rim dimensions
Carrefully enter rim dimensions values
measured using the caliper ref U.90N05
supplied.
Diameter:
Position knob 1 on the
value measured. The
display confirms the
value.
Width
Position knob (2) on
the value measured,
The display confirms
the value.
For "hidden weights"
(modes 4 or 5) enter
the value by measuring
the distance between
the hidden weight and
the other weight using
ruler UA.REG.
Off-set
Position knob (3) to
the value indicated by
off-set measuring arm.
The display confirms
the value.
4 - Operating
- Fit the wheel on the plate and enter rim
d i m e n s i o n s a s e x p l a i n e d i n c h a p t e r s
before.
- Spin the wheel by closing the wheel
guard.
- The display will count down "9-8-7—0"
- After the audible beep, the U.217AS
dis-plays 3 dasches "---" the value is
recorded, the brake is on.
After the wheel stop, the unbalance va-
lues are displayed, you can open the
wheel guard and fit the weights.

programs (not obligatory).
5 - Fitting the weights
Look for the out of balance position by
turning the wheel slowly in the direction
indicated by arrows (H). When the green
l i g h t ( V ) i s l i t t h e w e i g h t s h o u l d b e
attached at 12 o’clock in line with point
(K)
For inner edge weights, turn wheel slowly
in the direction indicated by arrows (E).
When lamp is green (V), fit a weight of
the value indicated at the highest point of
the inner rim (12 o’clock) in line with
point (K). The wheel balancing is now
complete.
Important: should you at any time change
the wheel parameters or balancer
program, your U.217AS will recalculate
the new values. However for "hidden
weight" modes (4 or 5) it will be
necessary to respin after measuring
between weight position with the ruler
and adjusting knob (2) as required
Note: read advice page 9 regarding wheel type.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
1 - Optimisation
Preferably using:
-Tube less tyre/wheel
- UA.JA Mounting flange.
This program allows the use of lighter weights
by optimising the tyre/rim posi-tion. You can
enter this program at any stage by turning
knob (1) fully to the left; the OPT light comes
on. If the OPT light flashes after your initial
measurement, we recommend this procedure
is carried out.
Do not forget to return
knob (1) to the rim diameter.
The
display shows OPI and a reference point is
indicated by the green light (V). Make a
mark on the wheel or reposition the wheel
so that the valve is at 12 o’clock with lamp
lit (V).
Spin the wheel, remove the wheel and tyre:
refit a half turn around the rim. Reinflate as
nommal, Remount onto the U217AS with
the valve or your reference mark at12
o’clock (indicator (V) lit). OP2: respin for a
second value, look for position 0 on the
display (L) and mark the tyre at 12 o’clock.
Remove wheel, remove tyre and refit with
the two reference marks aligned (valve +
mark or mark on wheel with mark on tyre).
Rebalance as normal, not forgetting to reset
the correct wheel diameter on knob (1).
Check display for message.
2 - SPLIT mode
When you balance tires fitted to modern
styled wheel rims, it may happen that the
position indicated by the system is not
suitable for fitting the external balancing
weight (no available base material or a spoke
or valve is in the way). Likewise, if you use
the “hidden weight” mode, it may be useful
to be able to hide what are unattractive
weights behind the spokes. Your U217
offers a functional mode allowing you to
break down the total outlying weight into
two equivalent part weights whose location
you can choose. After initiating the system
in “hidden weight” mode (4 or 5) the SPLIT
LED will blink to remind you that this mode is
available for use. To do this, turn the
Diameter knob (1) as far as it will go
clockwise. The SPLIT LED will stop blinking
and the central display (L) will show “12H”.
Position a rim spoke at “12 o’clock” in rela-
tion to the wheel balancer and confirm this
by turning the diameter knob as far as it will
go anti-clockwise. The wheel position will
be recorded and the central display will show
“n=4” (for example). You should then set
the number of spokes using the diameter
knob (3 to 8 spokes). After a few seconds,
the system will calculate the two outlying
weights to be fitted to the wheel rim.
Do
not forget to set the correct diameter
to ensure that the weights used are
correct.
NB: You can also opt for the SPLIT mode after any
measurement procedure by deliberately turning
the diameter knob as far as it will go clockwise.
