2.2.1.1 SMB/CIFS Controls
The Server Message Block network protocol is the most widely used network protocol. It
is used by all variants of the Microsoft Windows operating system, Apple Macintosh OS X,
and most Unix and Linux variants include support for it even if using a different networking
protocol. You may enable or disable SMB/CIFS support by checking the “Enable” box in the
“Windows Settings” Section (see illustration page 19.) You may also specify Workgroup, plain
text description, and enter an optional WINS Server address.
2.2.1.2 FTP Services
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a commonly used, open standard protocol for exchanging files
over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet).
Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer
connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that
network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP
access.) There are many existing FTP client and server programs, and many of these are free.
You may enable or disable FTP server support, by checking the “Enable” box in the “FTP
Settings” Section (see illustration page 19.) You may also specify a port other then the default
(Port 21), as well as supported file character set language.
2.2.1.3 NFS Services
Network File System (NFS) is a network file system protocol originally developed by Sun
Microsystems in 1984, allowing a user on a client computer to access files over a network
as easily as if the network devices were attached to its local disks. It is commonly used by
various UNIX and compatible host platforms. You may enable or disable NFS server support
by checking the “Enable” box in the “NFS Settings” section (see illustration page 19.)
2.2.1.4 Guest Access
Guest access is defined as any user access who is not defined as a valid user by the MegaDisk
NAS.
To enable or disable guest access, checking the “Enable” box in the “Guest Access
Settings” section (see illustration page 19.)
2.2.1.5 Quotas
Storage quotas are maximum space limits allowed per user. To enable or disable user and
guest quotas, check the “Enable” box in the “user quotas” and/or the “Guest Quotas” in the
quotas section (see illustration page 19.)
2.2.2 Share Management
Share Management controls are accessible
by navigating to “Control Panel” -> “File
and Print” -> “Share Management.” In the
Share Management screen (illustrated right)
you may create, delete, and assign access
control to sharepoints.
2.2.2.1 To create a new share, enter the desired
share name in the “Share Name” box.
The
MegaDisk NAS will automatically assign a path, and you may enter a share description in
the “Description” box. Click the
button to commit.
