Tides
Special icons mark the locations of tide stations throughout your chart coverage area.
There are two sizes of tide icon. On small-scale charts, the icon is smaller and is
labeled “TIDE”, as pictured below on the right. On larger-scale charts, or at closer
zooms, where there is more room for icon overlays, the icon is larger and provides some
data about the present tidal conditions.
The large version of the tide icon tells you the tide’s present height, whether the tide is
flooding (rising) or ebbing (falling), and a general idea of the present tide level (low, high,
or mid-tide).
Different colors and symbols are used to convey this information. The tide icon’s
appearance changes as tidal conditions change:
Blue Arrow: Tide is Rising; Red Arrow: Tide is Ebbing
A blue arrow pointing up indicates that the tide is rising. A red arrow pointing down
means that the tide is ebbing. The wave symbol moves up and down the icon to portray
general water level.
