Adjusting the variable-pitch pulley to the closed position
18.
Perform the following steps to adjust the variable-pitch pulley to the closed
position:
Remove the part of the belt wrapped around the variable-pitch pulley.
Loosen the setscrew used to lock the threaded hub into position.
Hold the variable-pitch pulley with one hand and turn the mobile flange
clockwise until it touches the other flange.
Make sure the setscrew is aligned with the flat surface of the pulley
threaded hub.
Tighten the setscrew on the flat surface of the threaded hub.
Wrap the A48 V-belt around the variable-pitch pulley.

Make sure there is no tension on the belt.

Evenly move the pillow block bearings as far as possible from the motor until
they can no longer be moved further. This will ease the tensioning of the belt
that will be performed later in this job.
21.
Verify the vertical angular alignment by laying a combination square against
the face of the driving pulley. Note the position of the bubble.
22.
Lay the combination square against the face of the driven pulley and note the
position of the bubble.
23.
Adjust the vertical angular alignment so that the position of the bubble on the
driven pulley coincides with its position on the driving pulley. Insert shims
under the pillow block bearings as required.

The bubble does not need to be perfectly centered, but it must be at the same
position for both pulleys.
24.
Lay a straightedge on the side of the driving pulley, as shown in Figure 38.
Then note the A distance shown in the figure. Use a measuring tape or a
ruler if necessary.

25.
Lay a straightedge on the other side of the driving pulley, as shown in
Figure 39. Then note the B distance shown in the figure. Use a measuring
tape or a ruler if necessary.
