Flat
’
frames are images taken with an even amount of illumination across the image
sensor. One way of achieving this is by placing a T-shirt over the objective of your tele-
scope while taking a picture of the twilight sky. Make sure that the exposure setting is
such that the average pixel intensity of the resulting image is somewhere around 33% of
maximum as shown by the histogram display. Flat frames will record the intensity varia-
tion of the pixels across the frame of the entire imaging system. This includes the opti-
cal system as well as that of the camera itself.
Once the three calibration reference frames are acquired, they can be used to adjust
any subsequent pictures taken with the camera such that the resulting image shows
only light intensity variations due only to actual photons falling on the image sensor.
The image will not have any noise associated with the various noise sources described
above.
