Adding an image description
General
An image description is a brief textual description that is stored in an infrared image
file.
You create the image description using a Pocket PC and then beam the image de-
scription to the camera using the IrDA communication link.
The image description can be retrieved by other software.
Differences
between a text
annotation and an
image description
Image descriptions and text annotations differ in several ways:
A
text annotation
is a proprietary annotation format from FLIR Systems and the
information cannot be retrieved by other vendors’ software. An
image description
uses a standard tag in the JPG file format and can be retrieved by other software.
■
■
The structure of a
text annotation
relies on
information pairs
(label and value), while
an
image description
does not. An image description file can have virtually any
information structure.
■
The concept of a text annotation relies heavily on
interaction by the user
. The user
selects one of several values for each label. The user can also enter numerical
values, and make the text annotation capture measurement values from the screen.
An image description is by its nature
static
, and cannot be changed interactively
by the user at the time when the image is saved. However, the image description
can be edited in a Pocket PC, using Pocket Word, before it is beamed to the
camera.
Valid file format
*.txt (i.e., plain ANSI text document)
■
■
*.psw (i.e., PocketWord document)
Maximum number
of characters
The maximum number of characters in an image description is 511.
NOTE
New PDA’s may use Microsoft® Office Word Mobile as a text editor. Image de-
scriptions created in this program are not supported.
■
■
New PDA’s may not be able to create *.txt files. In those cases, create the *.txt
file on your desktop or laptop computer, move it to the PDA, and then use the
PDA to beam it to the camera. You only need to do this procedure one time.
■
The procedure below assumes that the camera is set up to automatically ask for
an image description. For information on how to do this, see section 22.2.2 –
Changing settings for image saving on page 134.
■
You can also create an image description by using a USB keyboard that you
connect to the camera.
Procedure
Follow this procedure to add an image description:
To save an image, push and hold the Preview/Save button for more than
one second. At this stage, you will be asked for an image description.
1
Point your Pocket PC towards the IrDA port on the camera and beam the
image description to the camera.
2
To save the image description, push the Preview/Save button.
