2.2.1.4 Long-Term Indoor Storage
Factory preservative measures will protect the pump for long-term (greater than 6 months) storage
with the following precautions taken at the site:
1. At the beginning of the storage period:
a. Fill the bearing housings of pumps equipped with anti-friction bearings with vapor-phase
inhibiting oil to the level of the baffles.
b. Place 2 lbs (1 kg) of vapor-phase inhibiting crystals in an open canister near the center of
the pump unit, a 1 lb (0.5 kg) cloth bag in each nozzle that is securely fastened to the
flange cover, and a 1 lb (0.5 kg) bag in the lube oil reservoir.
c. Cover the pump with a plastic cover with a thickness of at least 6 mil (0.15 mm). Seal the
cover with tape, and cut a ventilation hole about 1/2 in. (13 mm) diameter every 4 ft. (1.2
m) along the baseplate (at a minimum, one hole at each end of the baseplate).
2. Every 3 months:
a. Rotate the shaft 180 degrees.
b. Check the vapor-phase inhibiting crystals and replenish as necessary.
3. Every 6 months:
a. Inspect and recoat internal surfaces of bearing housings and all parts within the bearing
housing.
b. Drain and refill anti-friction bearing housings with vapor phase inhibiting preservative to
the level of the baffles.
c. Inspect and recoat the external unpainted surfaces of the pump, the shaft coupling and the
internal surfaces of the pump.
d. Inspect accessible shaft seal parts for cleanliness and moisture.
2.2.1.5 Long-Term Outdoor Storage
The precautions for long-term outdoor storage are the same as for long-term indoor storage, with the
following additional precautions taken at the site:
1. At the beginning of storage:
CAUTION
Some mechanical seals may contain materials which can be
damaged by oil, in which case the seal piping and seal
housing should not be filled with oil (see mechanical seal
instructions in the APPENDIX).
a. Fill lube oil and seal flush piping with vapor-phase inhibiting oil, unless the piping is
made of stainless steel, or the specific piping arrangement makes it impossible to fill. It
may be necessary to disconnect threaded or flanged piping from the pump to preserve it
properly, in which case all openings which this creates should be covered. If the piping
will not be filled, then vapor-phase inhibiting oil should be poured into the seal housing
through any convenient connection to preserve the seal faces.
b. Store pump at least 6 in. (150 mm) above ground on wood blocks.
