4. OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND INSPECTION
This section provides instructions on how to start up, operate, and shut down the pump and the driver.
It also provides maintenance tips and identifies what to inspect for before and during normal
operation.
NOTE
All pressure, temperature, and flow requirements listed in
this section are defined in one of the following, unless
otherwise specified: OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
section of this manual, APPENDIX section of this manual,
Flowserve Engineering drawings in back of this manual, or
in your plant data file.
4.1 STARTUP
Before being put on line (i.e., started), the pump, the driver, the gear if applicable (see OUTLINE
drawing in the back of this manual), and the auxiliary systems require an external inspection for
operational readiness. Both the lube oil and seal flushing systems require flushing. A new pump or an
old pump that has been preserved by the plant requires depreservation before liquid is introduced for
the first time. And a pump that pumps a liquid at a temperature above 250°F (121°C) must undergo a
warm-up prior to operation to prevent thermal distortion and the consequent rubbing or breaking of
parts. The following paragraphs are given in the sequence recommended for startup.
4.1.1 READYING AND SERVICING DRIVER
Before operating the driver and gear (if applicable, see OUTLINE drawing in the back of this
manual), perform the operational readiness and servicing checks that are recommended in their
manufacturer's operating and maintenance instructions (see APPENDIX or your plant's data file for
information).
4.1.2 READYING AND SERVICING PUMP AND AUXILIARY SYSTEMS
Before starting the pump or an auxiliary system, perform the readying and servicing tasks in the given
sequence for the pump and any auxiliary systems installed.
4.1.2.1 Initial Steps in Preparing Brand-New or Factory-Overhauled Pump and Auxiliary
Systems for Operation
Proceed as follows:
1. Comply with requirements under DEPRESERVING PUMP.
2. Flush lube oil system piping and seal flushing piping as required in FLUSHING LUBE OIL
SYSTEM, CLEANING AND PRESERVING SEAL FLUSH PIPING.
3. Make certain that lube oil system piping and seal flushing piping are connected, secured, and
ready for operation.
4. Check components such as gauges, indicators, filters, temperature and vibration detectors,
piping plugs and caps, heat exchangers, lube oil system instrument panel, terminal boxes and
