IJ PUMP OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
4-5
BO2660-01
NOTE
The recommended warm-up rate is given in OPERATING
SPECIFICATIONS.
5. Start circulation in warm-up circuit and monitor flow, temperature, and pressure (see your
plant's data file and OUTLINE drawing in the back of this manual).
6. Verify that all valves in minimum flow and pressure reducing sleeve leak-off lines, when
installed (see your plant's data file or OUTLINE drawing in the back of this manual), are
fully open.
NOTE
For pumps without case thermocouples, surface pyrometers
are recommended for determining the case temperature
specified in step 7. Once a time is established for warm-up,
pyrometers need not be used for subsequent warm-ups,
providing that warm-up conditions remain relatively the
same.
7. Continue to warm the pump until differential temperature between the top and bottom of case
decreases to allowable temperature (see OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS), as indicated by
thermocouples, and the lower of the two temperatures is within the allowable range (see
OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS) of the stream temperature to which the pump will be
exposed when operating. At this point the temperature of the pump satisfies the condition for
hot standby or for being placed in operation. As an alternative to this procedure, warm the
pump for the minimum time period worked out by using pyrometers.
8. With hand-operated valves still positioned as set up above and spare or auxiliary lube oil
pump operating, place pump in operation according to instructions that are given in
STARTING PUMP immediately below.
4.1.3 STARTING PUMP
Place the pump in operation using the following task sequence:
1. Ensure:
a. that driver and gear (if applicable) have been serviced and are ready for startup as
required under READYING AND SERVICING DRIVER above;
b. that requirements for pumps and auxiliary systems under READYING AND
SERVICING PUMP AND AUXILIARY SYSTEMS have been met;
c. that auxiliary or spare lube oil pump is operating;
d. that the pump discharge valve is in bypass, if your pump is so equipped.
CAUTION
In order to ensure adequate lubrication of interior parts of the
pump, sufficient pressure differential must be generated so
there will be a nominal flow of pumpage across running
clearances; therefore it is essential that the pump is operated
above minimum governor speed of a turbine driver.
