IJ PUMP OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
4-11
BO2660-01
6. If a prolonged shutdown and temperature below 32°F (0°C) is anticipated, open all valves in
drain lines and verify that cooling water systems, seal flush system, and case are drained. (To
identify drains besides those on lube oil console, see OUTLINE and piping drawings in the
back of this manual, and your plant’s data file.)
CAUTION
Cold water should not be circulated through the lube oil
cooler or bearing jackets of an idle pump.
7. Leave valves in minimum flow and balance chamber leak-off lines open, when practical (see
your plant’s data file).
8. Leave suction valve open, when practical, thereby assuring that low-pressure end of case will
not be damaged by an unintentional reverse flow.
4.3.2 FROM ON-LINE OPERATION TO HOT STANDBY
A pump on hot standby should be put on line (see STARTING PUMP) once every 2 weeks for 1 to 2
hours to check its operation. To assure that the pump operating with flow at a temperature of 250°F
(121°C) and above can be put back on the line without delaying for warm-up, proceed as follows:
1. See that valves in minimum flow circuit (see you plant’s data file) are open, then close
discharge valve (or place discharge valve in bypass).
2. Cut power to driver; recommended procedure for turbine unit is to stop turbine by tripping
emergency overspeed trip.
3. See that suction valve remains open.
4. After rotation stops, reopen discharge valve and see that the check valve is tightly closed by
watching for reverse rotation.
5. Leave following valves in the positions given:
a. Valves in cooling water circuit as furnished to applicable units: heat exchanger, seal
housing, driver, etc.: OPEN. (To determine cooling systems that are applicable to your
pump, see OUTLINE and PIPING drawings in the back of this manual, and your plant’s
data files.)
b. Valve in pump vent line, when line is installed: OPEN.
c. Valves in drain lines, except any functioning as part of warm-up circuit: CLOSED.
6. Leave valves in minimum flow and balance chamber leak-off lines open.
7. Operate spare or auxiliary lube oil pump (see lube oil console manufacturer’s instructions in
APPENDIX).
8. Verify that valves in warm-up circuit are open.
NOTE
To permit pump to cool off and be taken out of service when
in hot standby, close warm-up circuit and stop lube oil flow
when the case temperature drops below 100°F (38°C).
