4.4 MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION TIPS
Although the centrifugal pump operates for long periods without maintenance, the operator should be
alert for conditions that could impair pump operation. Based on factors such as operating hours,
environment, pumpage (or flow), and age, periodic inspections and servicing requirements should be
established and records kept on the quantity of the lube oil (lube oil) required, dates of inspection and
service, and conditions observed during each inspection. Conditions to be alert for are:
1. drop in capacity, drop in discharge pressure relative to suction pressure, or increase in power
consumption of an operating pump;
2. vibration and unusual noisy operation;
3. change of pressure in pressure reducing sleeve line;
4. drop in lube oil pressure downstream of filter;
5. rise in lube oil temperature at lube oil cooler outlet, radial bearing outlet, or thrust bearing
outlet;
6. rising differential pressure across lube oil filter;
7. increased seal leakage;
8. loosening of foundation bolts in baseplates, soleplates, or equipment holddown bolts.
Periodic inspection should be external; that is neither upper bearing housings, seal units, or the
internal assembly should be removed except for:
1. drop in capacity or drop in discharge pressure relative to suction pressure and
2. drop in pressure or other evidence of internal wear or mechanical trouble.
4.4.1 PERIODIC SEAL REPLACEMENT
To avoid unscheduled maintenance on the mechanical seal, parts should be replaced when their total
operating hours reach the maximum number of operating hours that is recommended by the seal
manufactured (see seal manufacturer’s drawing in APPENDIX).
4.4.2 BEARING HOUSING GASKET MATERIAL AND THICKNESS
Some bearing housings are designed to use gaskets and some are designed to use a sealant only.
When a gasket is used the gasket thickness and material are critical; both shall identical to the
original.
4.4.3 LUBE OIL CHANGE RECOMMENDATIONS
Flowserve recommends that the lube oil in the pump be inspected periodically and changed
whenever:
1. the lube oil color darkens, indicating contamination from dirt and foreign substances;
2. the lube oil appears milky or emulsified; or
3. foreign particles appear in the lube oil.
4.4.4 ACID OR CAUSTIC WASH
Circulation of an acid or caustic solution through the multistage pump (for example, when cleaning
the system that includes the pump) will corrode it. And more importantly solid particles from the
