define when guidance to personnel on noise
limitation is required, and when noise exposure
reduction is mandatory. This is typically 80 dBA.
The usual approach is to control the exposure time
to the noise or to enclose the machine to reduce
emitted sound. You may have already specified a
limiting noise level when the equipment was ordered,
however if no noise requirements were defined, then
machine above a certain power level will exceed 80
dBA. In such situations consideration must be given
to the fitting of an acoustic enclosure to meet local
regulations.
Pump noise level is dependent on a number of
operational factors, type of motor fitted, flow rate,
pipework design and acoustic characteristics of the
building. The WIK pump noise level is in the range of
85 to 95 dBA, this value is estimated and cannot be
guaranteed.
The dBA values are based on the noisiest ungeared
electric motors that are likely to be encountered.
They are Sound Pressure levels at 1 m (3.3 ft) from
the directly driven pump, for "free field over a
reflecting plane". For estimating L

sound power
level (re 1
pW)
add 17 dBA to the sound pressure
value.
If a noise study is required, please consult
Flowserve or a noise specialist for assistance.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE
2.1
Consignment receipt and unpacking
Immediately after receipt of the equipment it must be
checked against the delivery/shipping documents for
its completeness and that there has been no
damage in transportation. Any shortage and/or
damage must be reported immediately to Flowserve
and must be received in writing within one month of
receipt of the equipment. Later claims cannot be
accepted.
Check any crate, boxes or wrappings for any
accessories or spare parts that may be packed
separately with the equipment or attached to
sidewalls of the box or equipment.
Each product has a unique serial number. Checks
that this number corresponds with that advised and
always quote this number in correspondence as well
as when ordering spare parts or further accessories.
Flowserve ships the pump mounted on its baseplate
and soleplates, which is secured to a skid formed of
heavy timbers, and when greater protection is
necessary provides a shipping enclosure as well. If
Flowserve provides the driver and the auxiliary
equipment, they are shipped separately, but
prepared and handled in the same manner as the
pump. Shipments of pump and driver that terminate
within the Continental Limits of the United States are
protected by an open-frame. For some shipments
into areas of extreme climatic condition a 6-mil (0.2
mm) clear, plastic cover over the unit provides
additional protection.
2.1.1 Receipt inspection
Directly on receiving the shipment, it is important to
perform a visual inspection of the entire pump unit
(that is, motor, piping, vents, etc.,) as follows:
1) Check shipping enclosure for evidence of
mishandling and clear plastic cover for tears,
rips, and misuse; also verify presence of vapor-
phase inhibitor.
2) Remove enclosure and cover, and check
shipment for damage from collision and the
elements.
3) Check auxiliary equipment and piping for
distortion, breakage, gouges, and deep
scratches.
4) Check pump, driver, and accessories for deep
scratches and gouges; painted surfaces for
damage.
5) Check for missing or disturbed flange covers
and piping plugs.
6) Check equipment against manifest, and list
shortages.
2.1.2 Inboard and outboard bearing shipping
shims
Do not rotate shaft with shipping
shims installed. Failure to comply can result in
damage to the shaft.
When the bearing housings bear identification that
shipping shims are installed in place of tilting pad
sleeve bearings (the bearings are boxed separately)
remove the shipping shims and install bearings
before rotating the shaft.
In general, care is to be taken when removing
crating, coverings, and strapping in order not to
damage any auxiliary equipment and/or the paint
finish.
2.2
Handling
Boxes, crates, pallets or cartons may be unloaded
using forklift vehicles or slings dependent on their
size and construction.
