How to check a heating element
If you notice an element isn’t working, the first step is to check the wiring at the terminal block. It
is not always obvious that they are loose and need to be tightened up.
If an element is broken, it needs to be replaced.
There are several ways of checking if an element doesn’t work and to locate it in order to replace
it.
1-‐
Make sure that all the heating zones are set to the same level e.g. 70%. Heat up a thin
sheet of plastic until it is almost ready to be formed (until it is flexible like rubber), push
the heaters back and carefully check if you can spot a cold area on the plastic with your
hand by gently tapping the sheet with your fingers (or use a stick) to make sure that you
have a uniform flexibility across the sheet. If you find one area of the sheet that is more
rigid than the rest, then that is area that has the broken element.
2-‐
Make sure that all the heating zones are set to the same level, preferably 100%. Place a
mirror on the drape table to visibly see the heaters. When working properly on full power,
the quartz elements should be glowing red
, although you will get some variation between
the zones because of the
different wattages. If an element is no longer working, then it will not
glow red.
