Periodic Inspections and
Maintenance, General
Information
It is the driver’s responsibility to inspect the vehicle
and ensure it is completely roadworthy before placing
it into service.
Commercial vehicles may be subject to inspection by
authorized inspectors; an unsafe vehicle can be
taken out of service until the driver or owner repairs
it.
Use the following checklists to ensure that vehicle
components are in good working condition before
each trip. Careful inspections eliminate downtime to
fix overlooked or forgotten items.
The checklists in this chapter can be copied and kept
as a record that the procedures have been
completed. For details on how to inspect each item
on the checklists, see the corresponding procedure
(step number) in
Checklists
NOTE: Checklists in this chapter correspond
with the procedures and steps in
Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections and
Maintenance
. Your vehicle may not be equipped
with all components listed below.
Daily Pre-Trip Inspection Checklists
See the following tables for a list of procedures that
should be performed daily, before the first trip. Place

Inspect mirrors, windows, and windshield.

Ensure the horn, windshield wipers, and
windshield washers are working properly.

Verify heater and defroster are working
properly.

Check the operation of all interior lamps

13 Inspect all seat belts and tether belts.
14 Make necessary mirror adjustments.
15 Test the service brakes.
16 Test the backup beep.
17 Test the gas detection system.
